Airtel, Google to launch Android Go phones in India
Bharti Airtel announced a partnership with Google to launch low-cost Android Oreo Go edition smartphones in India. Airtel will be launching these products under its ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ programme where it subsidizes the price of 4G VoLTE handsets with bundled data offers and cashback.
Google had, in December last year, unveiled the Android Oreo Go edition for smartphones with 1GB RAM or less.
These low-cost smartphones, which come with a new range of apps designed to run faster while using less data, are expected to play an important role in further expanding internet adoption. Thanks to the excellent front camera, doing identity verifications on video will be available.
The first wave of Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphones will start shipping from March this year, Airtel said in a statement.

The company hasn’t announced the pricing yet, so we will need to wait slightly longer for the final price.
For now, Lava has revealed that the handset will come with a 2-year warranty and cashback offer of Rs.2,000 from Airtel under the telco’s ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative.

Connectivity wise, the smartphone comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, and 4G VoLTE. On the software front, it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo.
